PDF Version Compatibility Guide: 1.4 vs 1.7 vs 2.0 — Which Version Should You Use?
Not all PDFs are created equal. The <a href="https://www.iamuu.com/en/blog/how-to-create-fillable-pdf-forms-online-free/">PDF form</a>at has evolved through multiple versions since its introduction in 1993, with each version adding new capabilities: transparency, layers, embedded multimedia, AES encryption, and more. The version of your PDF determines which features are available, which viewers can open it, and how reliably it will work across different devices. Understanding PDF versions helps you make the right choice for your documents.
PDF 1.4 (Acrobat 5.0, 2001) introduced transparency and tagged PDF for accessibility. It is the oldest version still in common use and offers maximum compatibility — virtually every PDF viewer ever made can open PDF 1.4 files. Use PDF 1.4 when compatibility is your top priority, such as for government forms, legacy systems, or mass-distribution documents where you cannot predict what software the recipient will use. The tradeoff: no AES encryption (only RC4), no layers, no embedded 3D content, and limited metadata support.
PDF 1.7 (Acrobat 8.0, 2006 — also standardized as ISO 32000-1:2008) is the modern standard and the recommended default for most documents. It adds AES-256 encryption, improved <a href="https://www.iamuu.com/en/blog/image-color-calibration-icc-profiles-print-vs-web-guide/">color management</a>, XFA form support, and better JavaScript capabilities. All modern PDF viewers — Adobe Acrobat Reader, browser-based viewers, Preview on Mac, mobile PDF apps — support PDF 1.7 without issues. PDF 2.0 (ISO 32000-2:2017, implemented in Acrobat 2020+) is the latest major revision. It modernizes several areas: deprecated XFA forms in favor of pure AcroForms, improved digital signature support with PAdES (PDF Advanced Electronic Signatures), better Unicode handling for non-Latin scripts, and clearer specifications for accessibility and tagged PDF. PDF 2.0 also removes ambiguous legacy features, making the standard cleaner. However, adoption is still growing — not all viewers fully support PDF 2.0 yet. Use PDF 2.0 for new projects where you control the viewing environment, or for archiving documents that will be opened in the future.
